The CU Boulder Asian Studies Graduate Association (CUBASGA) invites submissions for its annual graduate student conference, to be held fully in-person on the CU Boulder campus on February 07 & 08, 2026.

We invite current graduate students from across the US and around the world engaged in research on Asia, particularly in the fields of Chinese and Japanese studies, to submit proposals on their research across fields, such as: Anthropology, Art & Art History, Literatures, Economics, Ethnic Studies, Ethnomusicology, Film Studies, Geography, History, Linguistics, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion, Sociology, Theatre & Dance, Urban & Regional Planning, and Women’s Studies.

The conference will include keynote addresses from two prominent scholars in Chinese and Japanese studies: Professor David Schaberg (Department of Asian Languages & Cultures, University of California, Los Angeles) and Professor Erin Brightwell (Department of Asian Languages & Cultures, University of Michigan). Keynote speakers and University of Colorado faculty will be on hand to provide feedback to presenters throughout the conference. Above all, the conference is a forum through which graduate students, researchers, and faculty can engage in dialogues of critical importance to the development of our respective fields, providing participants with opportunities to expand their academic perspectives as well as academic and professional networks.

The Colorado Japanese Language Education Association (CJLEA) held its semi-annual assembly on Saturday, October 4, 2025, at the University of Northern Colorado Denver Center. During the meeting, elections were conducted for the 2026 CJLEA officer positions. Hisako Schibli, Associate Teaching Professor of Japanese, was re-elected as President, marking her third term in this leadership role.

CJLEA serves as a vital network for Japanese language and culture educators across Colorado and surrounding areas. Its mission is to enhance the quality of Japanese language education at all levels. To support this goal, the organization hosts an annual Japanese Speech Contest for learners and offers professional development opportunities for teachers.

Hisako continues to lead with passion and dedication, working alongside fellow educators in the Rocky Mountain region to promote the teaching and appreciation of Japanese language and culture.

We are delighted to celebrate Teaching Professor of Chinese Yingjie Li and Assistant Teaching Professors of Chinese Runqing Qi and Yu Zhang on receiving the 2025 Exceptional OER Creation Award at the Colorado Open Educational Resources (OER) Conference.

The award honors their innovative work on EverFlow Mandarin: An Intermediate-Advanced Level OER Chinese Textbook, a project that makes advanced Mandarin study more accessible by removing the burden of textbook costs.

This year, the Colorado Department of Higher Education and the OER community recognized outstanding contributions across five award categories. Among them, Li, Qi, and Zhang’s EverFlow Mandarin stood out for its creativity, quality, and lasting impact on the OER landscape.

“It’s incredible to see how the use of OER has expanded over the past several years,” said Dr. Angie Paccione, CDHE Executive Director. “When we remove the cost of access, we remove the limits on potential.”

The team’s work not only supports students at CU Boulder, but also opens opportunities for Mandarin learners worldwide. We are proud to celebrate their achievement and look forward to the continued impact of their contributions in advancing accessible, high-quality education.

Please join us in congratulating all of the students who competed in the 2025 Japan Cup, a quiz bowl style team competition held annually by Japan America Society of Colorado. It is a day-long competition for a wide variety of subject matter ranging from current invents in Japan, Japanese traditional and pop culture to Japanese grammar and Kanji.

Participants and competing levels from CU Boulder:

Level 3 (equivalent to JPNS 1020): Two teams and 5 students registered (Atsadang Deebunmee Na Chumphae, Matthew Bracknell, Katie Chuinti, Gage Swords and Brendan Pizzurro)

Level 4 (equivalent to JPNS 2120): One team and 4 students registered (1 is an alternate role) (James Corness, Joshua Forkell, Daniel Zheng and Tate Brand)

CHIN 3333-001 Race and Ethnicity in Chinese Literature: Sinophone Culture, Diaspora, and Identity

Surveys Sinophone thought and culture through close reading and discussion of selected works of Chinese-language fiction in translation. Students will learn about the historical contexts of migration, racial and ethnic conflict, and colonialism in which this literature was produced. Hyphenate identities such as Chinese-Malaysian and Asian-American will take center stage as we bring more complexity to the idea of "Chineseness."

CHIN 3381-001 Chinese Travel Literature: Journeys Within and Without, Real and Imaginary

Explores the world of travel writing in Chinese literature and culture. Widely different forms of real and imaginary travel have inspired a broad spectrum of travel literature in China. We will read and discuss different examples, from landscape poetry describing a hike through ragged mountains to travelogues about officials moving across the country, from factual geographical and environmental reports to fantastical novels about intercultural and interspecies encounters of the strangest kind. Taught in English. Formerly offered as a special topics course.

JPNS/KREN 3611-001 Speaking the Truth: Women's Counter-narratives of Korea and Japan

Explores the rich history of women’s writing in premodern Japan and Korea, focusing on works produced by and for women in vernacular scripts (kana and han'gǔl) during the Heian (794-1185), Kamakura (1185-1333), and Chosǒn (1392-1910) periods. Topics covered include the textual construction and subversion of idealized femininity, the representation of women's real lived experiences, and the subjective nature of historical truth.

Hisako Schibli, Teaching Assistant Professor of Japanese, was elected as president of Colorado Japanese Language Education Association (CJLEA) during their fall assemby on Saturday, November 4. Her term begins on January 1, 2024. Congratulations, Hisako! The CJLEA serves as an important resource among the teachers of Japanese Language and Cultures in Colorado and surrounding areas.
