Professor Antje Richter and Professor Emeritus Paul W. Kroll have both published new books recently.

Professor Kroll��s The Finest Souls of Our Rivers and Alps: A High Tang Poetry Anthology is published in De Gruyter��s Library of Chinese Humanities series. It is the first translation into any language of the only extant anthology compiled contemporaneously that was solely devoted to poetry composed during the fabled ��High Tang�� period. It contains 230 poems by twenty-four different poets and was completed around 753, with poems in various lengths, forms, and styles. Like all books in the series it includes original Chinese texts on facing pages to the translations, along with an introduction and extensive notes. Professor Richter��s Health and the Art of Living: Illness Narratives in Early Medieval Chinese Literature is published by the Harvard University Asia Center, in the Harvard-Yenching Institute Monograph Series. The book explores views on health and illness expressed in in a range of early medieval Chinese literary sources: essays, prefaces, correspondence, religious scriptures, and poetry. It delves into subjects such as how to deal with overwork and excessive mental exertion, how to read passages on health and illness in autobiographical narratives, and the rise of the poetical subgenre ��written while lying sick.�� You may order from the publisher here.

Description
The Taiping Civil War (1851�C1864) was one of the most destructive wars in Chinese history, with the death toll estimated between twenty and thirty million. What visions did survivors have for restoring their fractured society once the war ended? Katherine L. Alexander��s Teaching and Transformation approaches these questions through literature by examining the works of evangelical Confucian teacher Yu Zhi (1809-1874), who gave a voice to the zealous side of conservative Confucian reform efforts before, during, and after the Taiping War. His works offer radical visions of a world that could be restored through collective effort and goodness, while also revealing the shifting nature of power and highlighting the cracks in Qing society.

Yu��s works complicate the picture of socio-moral reform, particularly the Confucian mission of jiaohua (teaching and transformation). Though he viewed the disasters of the late Qing as the natural consequence of jiaohua��s failure to compete against socially disruptive media, such as vernacular fiction and theatrical productions, he also wanted reformers to engage closely with these genres. Yu became a vocal advocate of teaching with moral vernacular literature that he believed met commoners at their level. He emphasized the hope that by writing, printing, and performing such texts, every member of his audience could be transformed into teachers themselves, restoring society from the bottom up.

Thirteen previously published essays by Prof. Paul W. Kroll have been collected into a book and translated into Chinese by a group of his former students and graduates of our department. The book, titled Xunyuan yu wuma �Z�S�c��R (Tamed Kite and Dancing Horses), has been published by Nanjing University Press. It was organized and edited by Timothy Wai Keung Chan (PhD 1999, currently professor at Hong Kong Baptist University). In addition to Prof. Chan, thirteen other department MA or PhD graduates contributed to the volume, each of them translating a separate essay by Prof. Kroll. Emeritus Professor Paul W. Kroll has published a new book, The Poetry of Meng Haoran, in De Gruyter's Library of Chinese Humanities series. This is the first complete translation into any language of all of the poetry of Meng Haoran (689-740), one of the most famous poets of the Tang dynasty. Like other books in the series, it includes the original Chinese text, with the translation on facing pages, plus additional notes. It is also available online as an Open Access searchable file. Last fall Prof. Kroll published "At the Shores of the Sky": Asian Studies for Albert Hoffst?dt, which he and Prof. Jonathan Silk of the University of Leiden co-edited in honor of the person who has been for twenty-five years the chief acquisitions editor for Asian Studies at Brill Publishers. The book includes essays by twenty-two contributors on various aspects of Chinese, Indic, and Japanese studies, including Prof. Kroll's essay, "On Some Verses of Li Bo." Later this year a revised and expanded third edition of Prof. Kroll's Student's Dictionary of Classical and Medieval Chinese will be published by Brill.

Levi Thompson, Assistant Professor of Arabic, was recently interviewed by the popular literary website ArabLit about his work translating the Syro-Palestinian poet Ramy al-Asheq, who now lives in Germany. You can read the interview by Tugrul Mende. Ever Since I Did Not Die, a book of essays translated into English by Dr. Isis Nusair and edited by Professor Thompson, will appear soon with the Arab List at Seagull Books. My Heart Became a Bomb, a book of al-Asheq��s poetry translated into English by Dr. Thompson, will come out with the University of Texas at Austin��s Center for Middle Eastern Studies Press in January 2021 and now My Heart Became a Bomb is available for purchase.
