Bioactuated Textiles

Yellow and black woven textiles

We created a woven fabric combining cotton and strips of a milk-based bioplastic that reacts to moisture. When exposed to water, the textile as a whole curls and waves, visibly changing shape. The fabric can be reset with heat, pointing to new possibilities for sustainable, interactive clothing and wearable technology.
