Employee Preferred Name and Legal Name Change FAQs
General Questions
A legal first name is informed by legal documentation provided with hiring paperwork (social security card).Â
A preferred first name is the name an employee chooses to go by and is managed by the employee user in CU Resources via MyCUInfo.Â
A middle initial is a legal middle initial. It is informed by legal documentation provided with hiring paperwork (i.e. social security card)
A last name is a legal last name. It is informed by legal documentation provided with hiring paperwork (i.e. social security card)
Types of names are in HCM and are shared across all four campuses. If employees use a different name(s) from campus to campus, they will overwrite names at other campuses and/or create duplicate IDs that will need to be corrected.Â

A dead name refers to the birth name or former name of a transgender or nonbinary person that they no longer use after transitioning.Â
Preferred Name
When you initially apply to CU Boulder, you can create a profile using any name. Your offer letter is generated using the name provided in the profile creation and application process. Once the offer is accepted, you are asked to provide personal information including your legal name. This information is what is entered into our HR information systems.Â
Removing previous or dead names from CU Boulder systems is a complex process. We’re actively working on a solution and will share updates as soon as they’re available. If you are having issues, please fill out theand someone will assist you.Â
Due to the decentralization of campus systems, the HCM Preferred First Name may not feed into all campus-wide systems. If your preferred first name is updated in HCM and does not display in a system outside of those listed within Employee Preferred Name, it’s best to reach out to the system administrator or department owner of that application to confirm what name options are available. For example, some campus or department targeted email campaigns may only pull in the Legal Name and not the Preferred First Name entered in HCM. The campus is working with the System Office to include Preferred First Name in the Salesforce Marketing Cloud (Campus Email Communications), CU Marketplace, Concur, and Skillsoft. As additional systems are updated to include Preferred First Name, this site will be updated.
How to change your preferred name in the
- Go to the MyCUinfo Portal
- From the CU Resource drop-down menu, select My Info and Pay.
- Click the My Info tile.
- Click on the "Name" tab along the left-hand side. A form will populate.
- Enter the preferred name at Preferred First Name.
- ³§±ð±ô±ð³¦³ÙÌý³§²¹±¹±ð.
- You should receive an email confirmation that it is complete

How to change your preferred name in the Buff Portal (current CU Boulder students and post 1988 alum)
- Log in to Buff Portal.
- Select your profile at the top right.
- Select "Account Settings," then "Profile and Privacy."
- In the pop-up menu, select "Names."
- Select "Preferred" to expand that panel.
- Follow the steps on the page to add, edit, or delete that information.
- If you haven't set a preferred name, select "Add a new name"; if you have set one, select "Edit"Â to modify it or "Delete"Â to remove it.
